speaker: michelle
booklist: Deeney, John J. “Vale Atque Ave: Superlative Literature Studies in the Next Millennium” (課本)

I. crisis in comparative literature
ex: Henry Remak: “the loss of a sense of identity and cohension
in the field”(cultural studies vying for attention)

II. “Chinese School”
   terminology translation(1) + comparative poetics(2)= support
the strong roof of CW comparative literature
(1): descriptive translations and explanations, in English, of key
critical terms and concepts from theChinese tradition
(2): stress the need for a bilateral effort to do serious comparing
of poetic systems, east and west.
--- delusory thinking: result in anything like a common
poetics;  simply for systematic, in-depth investigation the
different poetics systems of the east and then crossing
east-west boundaries, include the major contributions of
                 western poetics systems.
‘composite poetics:’ a straightforward exposition and viewing in
parallel, of what constitutes the critical view-points of each major
literary tradition, both east and west.

III. Deeney’s idea about Chinese School:
    A. the term was to pique interest and provoke discussion,
particularly among westerners, urging them to look beyond their
        borders.
    B. a constant pricking of western consciences; western approach
to comparative literature is untenable in an international
         community of scholars.
    C. no nationalistic or political implication; a cultural ideology and
stress a supplementary alternative –not replacement- to
prevailing western notions and methodologies (mutually
         enriching)
    D. take Chinese literary experience as one’s point of depature, to
challenge western assumptions, concepts, terms and
         definitions  (prescriptive and descriptive)
    E. new approaches to re-invigorate an ancient literature; assist non-
chinese in appreciating what is distinctive about china’s
        contribution to world literature.

IV. vale atque ave: farewell (all past aberrations in comparative
     literature) and hail (Chinese School)
